Alternative Education

Providing education and life skills
for youth not attending
mainstream schooling.

Alternative Education provides learning environments for students aged 13 – 16 years who have been alienated from mainstream schools.

Mazda Foundation Trust Logo

Many thanks to the Mazda Foundation Trust for assistance with a three day outdoor education camp in the Mavora Lakes area of Fiordland National Park.

"An outdoor experience away from urban life in a beautiful national park can be extremely rewarding, the experience of camping, tramping, and generally enjoying our great natural scenic resources can have a
life–altering effect on young people."

Pub Charity Logo

Many thanks also to Pub Charity for assisting with funding for registration and accommodation at the 2008 Alternative Education Conference.

"Keeping on Keeping on"

Keep on looking for the positives, because our students bring many.

Keep on motivating them to realise their potential.

Keep on building relationships and connecting with whanau and community.

Keep on persevering and strive to develop quality AE programmes.

Keep on doing everything you do, to keep our students engaged in the education system.

Our centre at Winton REAP House takes students from Central, Northern and Western Southland and Fiordland, and our centre at Gore has a total of 9 students drawn from Eastern Southland and West Otago.

Alternative Education aims to try to get the students: back into mainstream schooling; into a job at 16; or into further training. Alternative Education works very closely with outside organisations and counsellors while supporting and guiding students into work. Most referrals come from schools, truancy staff, CYFS and police.

Students partake in a variety of subjects and activities following individual learning plans and covering unit standards if required. A Career Pathway Plan for each student ensures short block courses and work placement meet their vocational needs.

Students must meet one or more of these criteria:

  • have been out of school two terms or more
  • a history of multiple exclusions
  • a history of dropping out of mainstream school after attempted reintegration
  • dropped out of TLS Correspondence School
  • refused enrolment from one or more schools.
